The city of Agueda, Portugal has, for a second time, decorated a handful of popular shopping streets with colorful canopies of umbrellas.

The installation was designed by the Portugese firm Studio Ivotavares. An otherwise casual walk down one of these streets has become a surreal experience, animating the entire street as a more convivial public space.

Could some declining Canadian streets benefit from similar creative, seasonal installations? One Canadian example that has been a huge success was conceived by the Montreal firm, Claude Cormier: their summer installation for Le village in Montreal.
